Who We are

The Marano Lagunare Regional natural reservations are managed by the Commune of Marano Lagunare (Province of Udine, Region of Friuli Venezia Giulia). Marano’s Oasis is formed by:

The natural reservation “Foci dello Stella” (mouths of river Stella) includes the river Stella’s delta and the nearby lagoon area; it is a very extended and luxurious reed thicket with a dense water network which gradually flows into the lagoon. As a matter of fact, the reed thicket is a very common expression of the reservation’s life.

The natural reservation “Valle Canal Novo” has been built up from an old fishing valley of about 35 hectares, and some adjacent land. The valley presents itself as a lagoon-like area with expanses of water, kept away from the tides by perimetrical embankments. The main aspect is that of the brackish swamp.Picture of a typical building of the mouths of the Stella river

Interpretation and Naturalistic education

An exclusive and particular attention is devoted to the naturalistic and environmental education.

The schools seem to like our Visits Centre very much, maybe because of the possibilities it offers and the natural, environmental and logistic guarantees it provides.

The Valle Canal Novo becomes for every student a sort of “environmental gym” where the learning of biological notions and of the natural processes which regulate them happens not through studying or reading, but through direct observation and field experience.

Through active experience and emotions, we are able to stimulate in the students such curiosity and sensibility very useful to understand a natural environment full of surprises.

Conservation and Search

Within the research and experimentation activities, have a specific relevance the projects for Ornithological reintroduction.

For instance, we are trying to reintroduce a colony of Savage Goose, with the collaboration from the Regional Faunistic Observatory and the University of Trieste, following the experiments of Konrad Lorenz, reintroducing a kind of Goose considered to be extinct in Italy since the last Century.

In the Visits Centre it is also possible to observe directly some of the most significant biotypes of the lagoon, partly preserved in the old fishing valley, partly recreated.
